Encouraged and Empowered

In the message of women’s empowerment she receives from her involvement in this program, Dulce María hears an echo of the way her grandmother would inspire her when she was a child.

Even though Dulce María’s childhood was very difficult, she says, “My grandmother always encouraged me to continue my basic education.  Now I am an early-education teacher in my community. Her words and affection have allowed me to be more dynamic and proactive in my work environment.”

Because she and her family participate in the program led by local partner Asociación Cristiana de Jóvenes de Nicaragua (ACJ), Dulce María has joined their hands-on Farmer Field School and a Saving and Internal Lending Community (SILC). At the field school, she’s picked up a wealth of knowledge about sustainable farming practices tailored to the local climate realities. She replicates that learning at home, where she says she grows quite a variety of vegetables. As she’s shared what she’s learned with her community, she notices an increase in the bonds of trust everyone feels toward one another.

Dulce María is active in her SILC, where members save money together, grant each other small loans, and discuss their challenges and triumphs. “Today I can say that I am a more empowered woman because of my role in the SILC. I carry it out with a lot of love, and I feel supported by my group and by the ACJ staff team.

“Overall,” she continues, “I feel very grateful on a personal level because through all these activities I see I am capable of carrying out many activities on my own that I previously feared and doubted my aptitude for. I am more active, stronger and more independent. My group consults with me about helping them with different ventures. I am always eager to support my community.”
