Growing Hope Globally Mourns Death of Co-Founder Carol Sloan

It is with great sadness that Growing Hope Globally announces the death of one of our founders, Carol Sloan of Stryker, OH. She passed away on Tuesday, November 5 at Maple Ridge Farm in Hudson, MI. She was 90.

Carol’s husband Vernon preceeded her in death in 2017. Together, the couple farmed and raised six children. They also shared a passion for helping those living in hunger around the world. It was this passion that led to the founding of Growing Hope Globally (formerly Foods Resource Bank) in 1999. The Sloans worked together with farmers, agribusinesses and Christian international development organizations to develop a Growing Project model where farming communities in the U.S. help farmers around the world by growing crops or raising animals locally and selling them to fund agricultural development programs overseas, making a global impact.

“Growing Hope Globally is celebrating 25 years this year and we are incredibly grateful for the efforts Carol and Vernon made to found this organization and get others involved. Because of what they started, we have now impacted more than 2.3 million people with lasting solutions to hunger,” said Kaitlyn Slate, President of Growing Hope Globally.

“I was always inspired by her courage, spirit of adventure and willingness to learn in every situation whether it was in Tanzania, Nicaragua or in the U.S. She and Vernon were a team and it was their humble caring for people around the world that led to many others getting involved in Growing Projects,” said Bev Abma who worked closely with the Sloans to start the organization.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 10 from 3-6 PM and there will be a memorial service on Monday, November 11 at 11 AM, all of which will be at Stryker United Methodist Church.

We are forever grateful to Carol for her lifetime of service to others. Follow this link for more details on Carol’s life of faith and service to others.
